Tsatsu Tsikata: Five [5] Unique Things About Him

Ghanaian legal luminary Tsatsu Tsikata has been admired by many Ghanaians due to his line of work in the courtroom ever since he was adjudged a lawyer.

The astute lawyer is currently the counsel for NDC Presidential Candidate, John Dramani Mahama who petition the Supreme Court of Ghana over the 2020 elections.

Mr. Tsikata gets a reputation as one of the best lawyers after serving as junior counsel for one member of the big six, William Ofori Atta, counsel in top landmark cases like the trial of J.J Rawlings in 1979 after an attempted coup and other major cases.

He’s been labeled the ‘Law Faculty’ due to the in-depth matters of the law in the courtroom.

1. J.J Rawlings schoolmate in primary school

Tatsu Tsikata was born on October 1, 1950, at Keta in the Volta Region of Ghana but was brought live and grow at Adabraka in Accra (Ghana’s Capital).

He schooled with former military president Jerry John Rawlings.

2. He lecture for Oxford University in the 1970s

Tsatsu Tsikata attended Mfantsiman School in 1960, he progresses to the University of Ghana at the age of 16 where he graduated with First Class degree at the age of 18.

He later won a scholarship at Oxford University where he graduated with First Class again with a Bachelor of Civil Law.

Later he rose to the position of Junior Research Fellow for Oxford University before he returned to Ghana in 1974.

Mr. Tsikata serves as counsel for J.J Rawlings after the May 15 Uprising in 1979, where he represented Rawlings during a treason trial which brought Rawlings’s administration to an end after Rawlings successfully stage June 4, 1979 coup to overthrow SMC military government.

4. Tsikata refuse presidential unconditional pardon for a 5-year jail sentence, fight the state in court until they declare him innocent

After a trial that lasted between 2002 and 2008, arguably the longest ever court case in Ghana involving former government official, an Accra Fast Track High Court pronounces Tsatsu Tsikata guilty for causing financial loss to the state on 18 June 2008 by Mrs. Justice Hernrietta Abban.

After 8 years where he was charged for causing financial loss to the state, Appeals Court for Accra on 30 November 2016, declared him innocent where his 5-year jail term was quashed.

5. Asthmatic since age 4

Tsatsu Tsikata despite his beautiful career success as a lawyer and legend status lives with asthma as a medical condition since de age of four.

He manages his life with various asthmatic attacks, the worst of which happen while he was in the Nsawam Prison in year 2008 – he escape death narrowly after he was rushed to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for Accra where he receive treatment.
