How Thomas Partey joined Arsenal – It was no secret that Mikel Arteta was in dire need of a defensive midfielder to help strengthen his midfield as he looks to rebuild the Arsenal team.
The Gunners were able to secure the services of Dani Ceballos on loan from Real Madrid for a second consecutive season but they had failed to add another player who plays for a team in the capital of Madrid.
Since the beginning of the transfer window, Arsenal had tried negotiating a deal for Thomas Partey but all efforts had proved futile as Atletico Madrid insisted on Arsenal paying the release clause of the Ghanaian international.
According to reliable football transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, Atletico Madrid were demanding that Arsenal pay £50m which is the release clause in Thomas Partey’s contract in order for the player to switch camps.
A tweet by Fabrizio Romano indicated: “Atletico Madrid have no intention to start any negotiation for Thomas Partey, as reported by June. It’s £50m release clause to be paid immediately [NO installments] or nothing. Atleti board still convinced he’s not gonna leave the club on next 2 days.”
But fortunately for Arsenal and Mikel Arteta, the club was able to get the deal done on deadline day as they triggered the release clause to bring the Ghana Black Stars midfielder, Thomas Partey to the Emirates Stadium.
A statement released by Atletico Madrid read: “LaLiga has communicated to Atletico de Madrid this Monday at 11:28 pm that representatives of Arsenal have appeared at the headquarters of the football organization in order to exercise the termination clause of the footballer Thomas Partey.
“In this way, the player has unilaterally terminated the employment contract that bound him to our club until June 30, 2023.”
