The Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources (MSWR) is on its feet again.
This time kicking start an emergency evacuation of mountains of refuse at illegal dumpsites at the Nkawie MA Primary School and others in the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipality in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
Some areas in Ghana, are hard to access such as the Afari in kumasi due to poor road network. As a result of this , illegal refuse dumps at Akrofrom in the vicinity of Afari is yet to commence because of the said problem.
The officials of the ministry had charged themselves with a one-week ultimatum to clear all the illegal dumpsites in the municipality.
The initiative forms part of the government’s efforts to rid the country of filth and also make Ghana the cleanest country in Africa.
While the contractors at the Asokwa dumpsites had began working, others will start in the coming days at least in 48 hours time. Those places are Nkawie MA Primary School, Abuakwa DKC and Akrofrom in the Afari Electoral Area.
Speaking to some residents at Akrofrom in Afari Electoral Area, they applauded the government for undertaken such an exercise. They complained that illegal refuse dumpsites were a source of health problems to the community and due to that they had never lived free of illness.
The Assembly member of Afari Electoral Area, Antwi Nelson, indicated that waste collection must be done within a period of one month to enable them live disease and illness free.
He also said, the residents of his community had suffered gravely in the hands of these refuse dumbs and his face beamed with a light of joy when he saw that this exercise was being undertaken.He therefore thanks the government. “Words can’t express my joy”, he added.
