Galamsey Fight: Fomena, Amansie Chiefs Face Otumfuo

Two Chiefs under the Asante Kingdom are under investigation by King Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for allegedly engaging in illegal mining activities popularly known as galamsey in their respective communities.

“Already I have had reports on some things happening at Amanse, the Fomena area, and I will be investigating that to see what is happening,”, Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at a Regional Consultative Dialogue on Small Scale Mining held in Kumasi on Wednesday May 12, 2021 revealed.

According to the revered King, thirty percent of chiefs and other opinion leaders in the region directly or indirectly involved in the illegal mining galamsey activities which has taken a toll on the environment.

“On my part, I have already warned my Chiefs and elders against participation in such illegalities, and I will not hesitate to strongly sanction any such infraction.”, the Asantehene vowed.

“Even while we were here, one person said the chiefs are those who give them the lands [for galamsey]. With that he said, any chief who has given out lands for galamsey you need to know that you’ve done wrong… If you go back to your area and truly you see that you’ve given out lands for galamsey then what kind of chief are you? It is wrong. So let’s be careful,” the King warned.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, therefore challenged stakeholders to be truthful in the fight against illegal mining in the country and call out persons involved in the act since they’re known.
