Do Chelsea need Thomas Partey?

Thomas Partey

Ghanaian midfielder, Thomas Partey has been linked with a move to Chelsea in the last stages of the season’s transfer window which closes on 5th October 2020.

The 27-year-old who has been a mainstay in Diego Simeone’s team has been on the radar of English giants Arsenal who have been unable to secure his services.

Mikel Arteta was desperate to get the defensive and box to box midfielder to partner Dani Ceballos in midfield but it appears that the dream will not happen just yet as the team is in no position to pay the release clause being demanded by Atletico Madrid.

But Chelsea who have spent a lot of money this season including a huge fee for Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Ben Chilwell will be looking for a defensive midfield player to help them reduce the number of goals they conceded last season. But is Thomas Partey the answer to their problems?

Without a doubt, Thomas Partey is one of the best in his positions and it is no surprise that high profile pundits including former Chelsea player Joe Cole and former Manchester United player Rio Ferdinand have urged Frank Lampard to move in for the Ghanaian international.

His presence in midfield alongside Ngolo Kante will help protect Chelsea’s back four while allowing Kante to be at his destructive best just as he was while playing alongside Danny Drinkwater at Leicester City and Nemanja Matic during Antonio Conte’s first season in charge in which he won the Premier League title.

On the other hand, it appears impossible to fit both Kante and Partey in the same set up considering the fact that they both offer similar elements to the team.

It is also worth noting that pairing those two defensive midfielders will mean that Chelsea will likely be without Jorginho, Kovacic, or even Billy Gilmour who are noted for controlling and executing Chelsea’s possession-based game plan.

Thomas Partey will be a great signing for Chelsea but it is hard to see him serving any other role apart from serving as a back up to Ngolo Kante in the heart of midfield.
