Liverpool secured their first Premier League title in 30 years last season after opening up a huge margin between themselves and second-placed side Manchester City and Jurgen Klopp and his men will be eager to repeat that achievement this season.
The manager himself has admitted that his side will not defend the title but will attack it in a bid to win back to back Premier League trophies, a feat achieved by only Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea.
The defending champions started on a strong note winning all three of their opening fixtures and went into the fourth week with so much confidence after seeing Manchester City draw to Leeds United and Manchester United humiliated by Tottenham Hotspurs by 6-1.
Unfortunately for Liverpool, they will suffer a worse fate as they were shockingly demolished by an Aston Villa team who almost got relegated last season.
The huge defeat came as a result of missing the services of Sadio Mane and Thiago Alcantara who had been tested positive for COVID 19 and Alisson Becker who sustained an injury earlier.
The team’s inability to win without these players shows a lack of squad depth in their team particularly in goal, where Adrian failed to protect the post in the absence of Alisson.
While the defeat could be attributed to the aforementioned factor, there is no denying the fact that Liverpool’s defending this season has been shambolic and leaky.
The team conceded 3 goals on opening against Leeds United and were opened up several times against Chelsea and Arsenal in the second and third games respectively.
It is a worrying issue for the defending champions that needs addressing quickly if they are to achieve the back-to-back feat this season because as good as their attack is, their defense is gradually becoming weaker and weaker.
