The former member of Parliament for Nadowli Kaleo Hon. Alban has been elected as the new Speaker of Parliament for the eighth parliament after pulling a total of 138 votes on 7th January 2021.

The NPP nominated Prof. Mike Oquaye to continue for the second time while the NDC on the other hand nominated its long-serving member Hon. Bagbin.

After voting and counting, Hon. Alban Bagbin triumph over Prof. Mike Oquaye who pulled 136 votes which means one of the NPP MP’s voted for the NDC nominee.

Alban Bagbin Biography: Political Career

Alban Bagbin was one of the presidential aspirants for the NDC ahead of the 2020 polls but majority voted for John Mahama to lead them.

He is the only person who currently holds the record as having served both as the Minority Leader, during the Fourth Parliament, and the Majority Leader, during the Fifth Parliament.

Bagbin also served in various ministerial capacities, including helmsman at the Health Ministry under late President Atta Mills.

He was the Minister for Health until February 2013 when Sherry Ayittey took over the position.

He was also the MP for Nadowli Kaleo in the Upper West region serving his constituents for 28 good years.

Bagbin announced his intentions to run for president in 2008 on the NDC ticket, but he never stood for the primaries.

He became the Majority leader in parliament in 2009. Following a cabinet reshuffle in January 2010, he was appointed Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing by Atta Mills.

He has also been confirmed as Majority leader of Parliament under President Mahama’s tenure of office, he succeeded Dr. Benjamin Kunbuor who was appointed as the Minister of Defense.

Alban Bagbin: Early Life And Education

His parents were Mr. Sansunni Bagbin and Mrs. Margaret B. Bagbin who were both peasant farmers.

Mr. Bagbin is the fourth child of nine children of Margaret Bagbin and the thirteenth of the Bagbin family.

The renowned politician hails from Sombo, Nadowli West, Upper West and he attended Wa Secondary School and Tamale Secondary School.

He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Law and English at the University of Ghana in 1980.

He proceeded to the Ghana School of Law in Accra after which he was called to the bar in 1982.

The current speaker of parliament was born on September 24, 1957, at Sombo in the Upper West Region.

He holds Executive Masters in Governance and Leadership from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA)

Alban is also a member of one group known as Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA) and a member of the International Law and Human Rights Programme of the PGA since 1995.

From 1996 to 2001, Hon Alban was appointed as Chairman of the Advisory Committee on the Restructuring of the Water Sector (Ministry of Works and Housing) while between 1997 to 2001, he was a member of the National Media Commission.

Sumana was the chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs for the second parliament of the fourth republic.

Alban Bagbin is married to Alice Adjua Yornas Bagbin, who is also a Programme Officer of the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) office in Ghana.

They have been blessed with children.
