CK Akonnor had a win with the Black Stars of Ghana yesterday, as they defeated their Qatar opponents by 5-1 in a friendly game.
The Black Stars’ decision to play a high back line caught them off guard sometimes, with the equalizing goal showing clearly how vulnerable the defense was in that system but they were other things that CK Akonnor did right to ensure the Black Stars run out as comfortable winners against Qatar.
The first was the decision of the Head Coach to put Thomas Partey in a deeper role against Qatar. In the friendly against Mali, Partey was deployed as the most advanced player in a three-man midfield which saw the player playing in a 10 role, leading to his ineffectiveness throughout the game.
But the coach’s decision to bring Arsenal’s new signing in the centre of the field allowed him to have an impact on the game, Serving as one of a double pivot in midfield.
Thomas Partey supplied the assist for Andre Ayew’s first goal while he provided a beautiful ball over the Qatar defense which was exquisitely dispatched by Samuel Owusu for Ghana’s third goal.
The decision to return Thomas Partey to his natural position also ensured that there was room for the captain, Andre Ayew who played on the right side of the Black Stars attack against Mali.
Playing centrally this time, Andre Ayew made the expected impact as he bagged a brace against the Asian Champions.
The Black Stars needed the win against Qatar and CK Akonnor showed that he can deliver on the big stage with some tactical tweaks to his game plan.
